It is a form of fear that is excessive in relation to the situation, does not decrease with reasonable explanations and persuasions, is beyond voluntary control and leads to avoidance of the feared situation. Milder cases where the fear does not inhibit life development are called phobic fear. More severe cases where life development is inhibited are called phobic disorders and are classified as anxiety disorders.
